Writing a Thesis Statement

hello and welcome as you continue to develop your skills in a research and writing I wanted to take this episode of the ten minute teacher to help you in developing your thesis statement as I shared in a previous video good theological research and writing is about the thinking process and where that process begins is in the ability to ask good questions and to honestly question everything kate turabian and our students guide to writing college papers says this a researchers most valuable asset is the ability to be puzzled by seemingly obvious things like the shape of coffee rings or that the hair on your head keeps growing while the body hair doesn’t cultivate the ability to question the commonplace and you’ll never lack for research projects questioning the obvious is also the first step in critical thinking which is a skill much prized in the workplace so if you want to be successful not just in academics but in your workplace or any environment the ability to question everything to develop questions out of stuff that seems obvious to everybody else is your first key to success so let’s take for example this story out of Genesis 34 in which the sons of Jacob are confronting Chesham and Haymore because they’ve deceitfully taken their sister Dinah into a marriage relationship and they are really they’ve defiled her and they’ve defiled Israel by the way they’ve taken her so they they basically have this plan of tricking them so that they can conquer them and punish them for what they’ve done and to do that they plan this idea that well hey your people are uncircumcised but if you want to take our women as your wives you have to be circumcised first so really then this brings up the question of circumcision and what is it about circumcision that made Israel so different than the nations around them and that’s where you begin to find your research question by asking what intrigues you what causes your friends to ask questions what ideas claims or facts make you think wow I didn’t know that or how can that be possibly true questions ultimately lead you to important topics so that leads us to step two we need to pick a topic first you want to pick something meaningful a topic that matters to you and you want to narrow down your topic to a very specific idea so in this example which is better a study of the Old Testament or the book of Genesis well book of Genesis well what about the book of Genesis or the life of Abraham well the life of Abraham is better it gets more specific we keep going the life of Abraham versus the call of Abraham how about the call of Abraham vs. God’s use of circumcision in the call of Abraham so you see how very quickly we went from a very broad topic to a very specific one each one improving the potential quality of a research project so after you’ve kind of narrowed down an idea the next best thing is to consult at least to reference works about your topic so in my case I’m gonna open up the anchor Yale Bible Dictionary excellent resource and in it I find this article by David Noll Friedman who says this in the ancient Near East circumcision was widely practiced in two distinct forms certain classes of Egyptian men especially priests slit the foreskin to let it hang free many men from Western Semitic groups in Syria and Palestine removed the foreskin altogether the origins of the practice are irretrievable so he’s saying hey there’s all these groups that used circumcision and knowing where it started no one will ever be able to solve that question essentially so now that I’ve researched and a couple of reference works the next idea is then I have to pick a topic that has a clear issue or problem to do that effectively I’m really going to discover the issues at stake how does your topic fit into the big picture of history or culture or religion what topics are similar to your topic what are some of the subcategories of your topic what do your friends think about this topic is it interesting to them or a what-if question what if this happened or what if this topic were considered today in a different cultural context all these what-if questions get you really thinking about the deeper issues so next you’ll want to do a two to three hundred word summary write about what you’ve learned write about the basic issues surrounding the topic but understand you’re not making any attempt to solve quote-unquote hit any issues that are coming up in your mind you’re not trying to solve these questions you’re only trying to demonstrate your own understanding of the issues once you’ve done that you can move on to step three which is to formulate your research question next you want to formulate two or three possible research questions and how did you this well of course when a narrow your topic down to a specific question I recommend avoiding things like the standard who what when and where instead really focus on why and how these tend to be a lot more intriguing and these generate topics that are far more interesting for research you also want to consider turning your question into a problem by asking a so what question and so by finding a question and then turning it into a problem again it engages not only your mind as a researcher but it will help engage the mind of the reader so moving on from our story in Genesis a good topic might be circumcision in the call of Abraham and a question you might ask one possible one is did other people groups in the Middle East practice circumcision if so why did God choose circumcision as a sign for Abraham so in other words if this is well as a common practice as one of our books seem to suggest why did God use something that’s common as a symbol to set people apart here are some examples of things that would make a bad research question anything that the answer is too easily found in a single source if you can find the answer to a question by opening up your first book it’s not going to be a good research question anything that there’s only one irrefutable answer we’re not looking to research something that only has one answer that everybody agrees is the answer look for something that is controversial or has different opinions that way you can really dig in and explore your topic also if your research question has too many resources that means your question is really too broad so if you’re finding thousands of possible articles and resources that all addressed this question chances are you’ve picked something far too broad to be considered you want to find something that has a good amount of resources but not so many that everybody else has thought to ask those same questions this brings us the step 4 writing of your thesis so what is a thesis then it’s a concise statement of your topic that clearly defines both the purpose and the scope of your paper so here’s an example thesis statement given our earlier study this paper will examine God’s use of circumcision in the call of Abraham as a unique sign of divine covenant in the Near Eastern culture so here we have the topic God’s use of circumcision in the call of Abraham we have the purpose a unique sign of divine covenant and the scope which limits the study is within the context of Near Eastern culture another way to kind of visually represent this and it helps if you maybe write this down for yourself as you’re writing out your thesis statement is to put each of those key phrases into a topic purpose and scope statement you also find as you’re writing out these statements a useful formula from turabian section 2.4 says for example friedman claims and then you write what they claim but this researcher will show what you know that shows what you’re gonna explore so that’s a good formulaic example and there’s others within turabian another way to make sure you have a good thesis statement is to find an issue in blank that raises a question about a specific aspect of blank whenever you’re looking at who’s the answer will help explain a larger theme feature or quality of blank again you fill in these things so if you can write this sense and fill that in in a way that makes sense to say a friend so fill this in with your ideas share it with a friend and if it makes sense to them it’s probably a good thesis statement step 5 then is to write a basic outline and in your basic outline identify the main points that flow from your thesis statement one of the main problems you need to solve you want to write a preliminary three or four point outline as a starting point for your research okay and that’s it for the first five steps for developing your thesis statement but you may say I’m still confused or I’m still struggling with this whole process well here’s kind of a little exercise you could do that may help get your creative juices flowing and this is a little teaching exercise choose a task that is familiar to your making coffee saddling a horse making a paper airplane whatever you understand write a set of instructions to teach someone else this task and then I want you to go and teach someone else to do your task as that person tried to follow your instructions what came up how would you improve those instructions and as you do that you’ll kind of get your mind thinking about that process of teaching others to understand something that’s understandable to you and that’s exactly the same process of writing a research paper you’re taking something that you understand because you’ve researched and you’re trying to show somebody else how you came to a conclusion all right now it’s a great time to head to the library and begin your research

How to Write a Strong Conclusion

all right this is it a screencast about the last paragraph in your analytical essay I’m going to walk you through the steps that need to be in a strong conclusion and then I’m going to model it for you all along the way to wrap up my essay on milkweed okay so there are four components that need to be in your conclusion you’ve heard these before some of them restating your thesis is something that you’re going to kick off your conclusion with now I’m going to go into a little more detail on that because I don’t want you to just copy and paste the exact same sentence you ended your intro with you need to restate it you’ve already spent your entire essay proving it you don’t need to say the exact same thing again you’ll see I’ve got synthesized standing out because you need to synthesize your main points that you made in each three body paragraph next you don’t repeat them you synthesize them and I’ll show you how to do that finally you need to wrap up your conclusion by pulling back to the big picture here and showing your reader why your ideas should matter to them in the larger context of reading not just about this novel but in the big picture why do your ideas matter why should your reader remember them and learn from them and then in the end you just need to make sure that you end it feeling finished so I want to use this graphic again to remind you that we started our essay with an introduction that was quite broad big ideas were expressed a summary large statements about empathy and techniques used to create empathy and you just introduced those techniques as you move into the body you get a narrower focus you zero in on particular examples in this specific novel that prove these big ideas from your intro now we’re moving into the closing the conclusion where you pull back again you step back away from your specific novel and with each sentence in your conclusion you should feel like you’re stepping further and further away from your specific novel the first sentence of your conclusion is going to be pretty novel specific the couple sentences might be too but by the end you should be making large statements about reading in general okay let’s start off with the first point in a conclusion which is restating the thesis you just spent the entire body proving your thesis each body paragraph related back to your thesis and went into great detail now you need to remind your reader you need to pull back and remind your reader what your thesis was here is the original thesis statement from my introductory paragraph on my novel or my essay on milkweed the best authors are those who create characters that readers can empathize with in milkweed spinelli uses several techniques masterfully to create empathy in his readers including dramatic irony revealing character emotions and a unique choice of narrator this is the first sentence of my conclusion paragraph where I restate my thesis by skillfully blending moments of dramatic irony vivid descriptions of character emotion and a unique narrator Jerry Spinelli creates characters with whom we can truly empathize do you see how similar they are but it’s a bit of a shift it’s bringing back my three main points of dramatic irony descriptions of character emotion and the unique narrator it’s bringing back the idea that those create empathy but it’s pulling back to that big idea that techniques are used on purpose to create empathy okay so that’s going to be my first sentence of my conclusion paragraph that’s restating my thesis now let’s move on to the second task in a conclusion which is synthesizing your main points you can believe two things are true number one I just read your piece in number two I am NOT a moron I do not need you to repeat what you just wrote in the body paragraphs exactly in the way that you said it instead I need you to look at the closing few sentences from each body paragraph let’s think about this for a second for each body paragraph you started out with a topic sentence and identified the technique then you went into specific examples from the novel to prove how that technique creates empathy you wrote sentences of your own thinking that explained how that example from the book made you feel something and in the end of each body paragraph you wrote a closing sentence that specifically concretely explained the impact that each technique has on the reader why it works why it creates empathy those are the sentences you need to go back and look at to synthesize your main points let me show you my example these are the three sentences that I’m going to write in my conclusion to synthesize my main points my first body paragraph was about dramatic irony and at the end of that paragraph the understanding that I developed was this that anxiety and tension mount as readers are repeatedly placed in the position where they understand the events taking place more than the characters do that’s really the end result of that whole paragraph of dramatic ironies is the fact that we feel anxiety in tension and it builds and increases when we keep getting put in a position to know more than the characters do secondly my second body paragraph was about revealing character emotion so I’m going to say that detailed descriptions of body language and carefully crafted dialogue reveal emotions and make it easy for readers to place themselves in the shoes of Janina Misha and others now this sentence in blue did not appear anywhere in my body paragraph I am synthesizing the whole point of that second body paragraph but because of these descriptions of body language and the dialogue that each character speaks it’s easier for me to put myself in their shoes finally my last body paragraph was about the unique choice of narrator so here is the sentence that I’m going to use to synthesize the whole point of that third body paragraph a narrator who has no eye or emotional interpretation of the events around him allows readers of all identities to experience these events without bias and to form their own interpretations that’s the major understanding I came to at the end of that body paragraph so those are going to be the three sentences that calm after I restate my thesis because they synthesize my three main points now moving on to the third job that you have in your clusion conclusion paragraph we’re going to take an even further step away from the novel and we’re going to focus on why should the reader of your S or si care about what you just wrote your conclusion is going to show your reader why your analysis should matter to them when they put your paper down in your paper and your essay you’ve taught them something you’ve taught your reader how that authors specifically use techniques to create empathy on purpose but they might not read the book thief or the boy in the Striped Pyjamas or a mouse they might read something else but their authors are doing the same thing yours did for similar reasons that’s what you need to talk to them about at the end of their conclusion paragraph go back to the big idea why should they why did you bother to write this stuff down I know it’s good I told you to do it but I want you to pull back from that narrow focus on this book and make the point that a skilled author any author of any book is going to create characters that we will miss when we leave them and that authors create characters with whom we’re invested so that we in turn are receptive to the message they’re trying to communicate in their book if you don’t care about the characters you don’t care what the author’s trying to say either there’s a reason why we need to care about these characters regardless of what book it is you need to make a statement about that at the end of your conclusion let me show you what mine is like readers we are drawn to texts that allow us to step outside our own reality and experience another time place or people at the same time we crave connection and the ability to see ourselves in these times and imagine our own response to events this right here these two sentences in pink are the sentences where I step away from my specific book and I talked about as a reader in general we want to experience a different reality but at the same time we want to be able to imagine ourselves in it okay now the sentence in red makes a connection for the reader of my essay about why this is so important by using techniques that create empathy in their readers authors make this possible that sentence tells the reader of my essay why everything I just wrote should matter to them that it’s all these little techniques that create empathy that make it possible for us to go in our minds to a different place a different time be with the different people and imagine ourselves in their shoes because we can empathize now the last thing you needed to do in your conclusion paragraph was to end with a sense of closure make it feel like it’s finished wrap it up and the sentence in black is the way that I’m doing that the authors who do this most skillfully create characters that we miss spending time with when we when the final page is turned the end okay so now I’m going to come over and show you on my model essay this is the way that whole paragraph looks start to finish I’d like you to pause the screencast now and read this all the way through and see how I started by restating my thesis I moved into a synthesis of my three main ideas I pulled back from the big picture right here and talked about why this should matter for any book in general and I left them with a sense of closure pause the screencast read this conclusion paragraph and write your own

Writing a 5 Page Research Essay in 1 Night! (+ A Secret Grammar Trick)

hey everyone welcome back to my channel and today is March 9th it’s a Thursday and this vlog is going to be specifically my journey of writing a five page paper that’s due tomorrow I usually try not to procrastinate and this is a really situation of procrastination but I was just serviced this week I had a draft for different paper due today in like an hour by hour to finish that I cost all this morning it’s 12 o’clock reading outside of class sophomore yesterday I had a final presentation so the couple days before that I was working on my final presentation and then I had homework for another class so it’s just a lot of like hectic stuff that happens and we only got be like official prompt of this paper last week I’ve only had a week to do it it’s not like something super crazy but I know I can like turn out in one day so I’m it’s like show you the journey beyond just sometimes it does happen it’s not that you want to procrastinate but sometimes you just are really busy in college because you have other assignments that are like lined up like obviously I had a paper like of drafty today so I had to work on that paper instead of working on the paper that’s due tomorrow so it just happens but I’m going to show you my journey and it starts with guys cons class and now I’m having lunch at my three house I’ve been like a little nook area and today is burrito bar day so I mean my room I don’t eat upstairs because I just wanted to like relax a little and be antisocial so I’m gonna watch the season finale of America’s Next Top Model about loaded and then look at this you guys I have a nice bowl with chips and then we have some chicken to fish some lettuce lots of block corns pico cheese some eat this and enjoy and then we’ll get to the paper writing everyone okay like funky really wanted six on the shades so weird that was over now we’re going to be using collaborative research for our paper no go realistic more importantly our professor and our GA wants like hard copy like books like physical books from the library of some sources so we have a couple of those probably get like two this will be good on this but here we are at the music library me show you I showed you this in a previous vlog as well we had our lock pixels cosplay advertiser here and then I have two of my lectures on this one or this lecture hall head over here showing her a call and I will not spell it Schomberg a library entrance is play so getting down and dirty old fashioned getting information from books pieces library oh yeah all right we’re on it so you saw the last clip of me study and not studying the library doing research so I got one full page of research like singles we felt really good so now I’m going to my class for an hour discussion and then I’m done class for that meant get ready I’m definitely in need of an athlete on the fatigue right now it’ll very very long a long holidays like I said a super-busy right off condition all right so I finished with class and then I went to my 3 oz for like an hour I’m tracks when I grab some stuff the pink meeting up this 19 campus team going to lean them in a good meeting and recapping our event on Tuesday which is great but look at how gorgeous your fun side is looking right now yes PCL is playing right penny time uni and I vlog that I’m there right everyone so I’m sorry I forgot to vlog at my pink meeting but I’m home now at DG and I’m doing some research or update more research before Yom Kippur we have to look for YouTube interview so I’m watching some of these and I’m going to write some song now is this up or analyzing some songs and I’m like every out-of-focus amazing but yeah got a little reach there but I can’t we’re completely out of focus there you go Oh district lie a lot I wish stretch doesn’t just like its trunk announcement amazing they have some nice finishes research in my bed and I’m gonna go ahead and head upstairs and do some writing and stuff like that so alright so I contact that because they weren’t flying eyes but English I’m downstairs now and I’m still working on my paper and I finished one turn the brightness down sounds crazy okay but I finish all the research forms so I have the different articles and novels and CDs and stuff cited researched it up like the source and then like the notes I took from it that I want to use I’ve all that ready and now it’s time to actually write my paper but it’s 10:20 now and I’m going to take a little break and respond to some emails just to cut up the work a little niceness all the research you might bring a little break and answer some emails like a lot of emails sometimes from you guys which is cool but mostly business school related things like that so I have to answer them but I wanted to show you guys something super cool that I actually utilized now and it’s the system school I’m really Orange right now but the line is just really funky but it’s the system called grammarly and it’s super super cool and basically a like spellcheck and programmer program or extension that you can have on your browser okay so I say like I’m writing this email and I wrote the sentence and it’s just like my name is Anita I wanted to reach out to you all to tell you about a great so I applied this was great the extension the Chrome extension automatically like shows you you have two mistakes in this email and one of them being is great so after you hover over it then oh let’s solve it great and then it changes it and it even knows things like params say like grammarly and then I can capitalize it like that so it’s really easy like pixel things and then I like search your email and then once you have the all clear gee that means everything is good in regards to choose grammar and spelling so this is a completely free extension so all you have to do is go to gramley and you can download the extension or like add it to Chrome so here it is it just exists and right now so yeah so it’s gramley for Chrome it can check grammar and spelling for mail and other like applications and then what’s really cool is you can like make a new document and say like I’m writing this in word basically I’m going to copy and then paste this over to my grammar li page and then it will go ahead and check to see stand checking and then I will say there are seven advanced issues which are not included in like the free trial basically you have to pay more to get like the advanced grammar features on it but I mean this is like basically good for app so it’s great if you really care about making sure your grammar is correct and learning from it because it not only tells you what’s wrong is like the thing is with Microsoft Word it will say like we find something a hit like something’s a fragment but it will never fix it like it won’t tell you how to fix it while grammar actually does so it’s kind of cool but yes and if you have the premium version you can like install it automatically into like Microsoft Word or whatever you’re processing like word processing system is so grammerly is a part of it right now I have like the classic word spell check and grammar check which sometimes is inaccurate you see it so if I have a lot of like mistakes and stuff in here all right but with that I’m going to go ahead and answer a couple emails and do that a little bit and then we’ll get on to paper writing all right everyone so update it’s been about an hour later and I finished about half my paper so it’s been about three and a half or two and a half pages we’re almost over three pages and it’s a fourth page paper so we’re getting there it’s going good so keeping you all posted all right so time for another hourly update it’s currently at 12:30 another hour in and I’m just doing my conclusion paragraph so we’re almost done and then I’m going to go ahead and sleep on it and proofread it tomorrow and then maybe run it through grammerly just to see if it can catch anything that microsoft word did it in regards to grammar not necessarily spelling and then I’ll go ahead and submit it tomorrow two o’clock that looks going to finish this up and then I’ll wrap up the vlog all right so it’s 1248 and we are officially finished look at this beauty oh yeah so I’m just going to ahead and wake up early tomorrow he’ll proofread it make sure it’s all good once my mind is like clear and I have all this dizzy gillespie out of my head but yeah I hope y’all enjoyed this vlog way it was helpful enjoying some tips and tricks and just showing me that it is possible to get things done in a crunch when you need to know especially it was like platforms like grammarly I think it’s really cool and I doesn’t want to try the premium sometime because my grammar is pretty bad when it comes to essay writing and more like the person view all my thoughts out so Kelvin is a much better like paper writer so he’s still working on his butt alright thank you all so much for watching it’s fishing for trout walk and I’ll talk to you then bye [Music] and

Writing the 2017-2018 Common Application Essay: Prompt #1

Writing the 2017-2018 Common Application Essay: Prompt #1

hi this is Kevin with word advice thanks for joining us in our series on the common application essay today we will discuss prompt number one for the essay a meaningful background identity interest or Talent so let’s look at the prompt some students have a background identity interest or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it if this sounds like you then please share your story as you can see we’ve highlighted four terms and bold background identity interest or talent now though you should have by now probably brainstormed some ideas about what you’re going to write on this topic is so vast that today we’re going to try and narrow it down a little bit so let’s look at the four components the first one is background if you have perhaps a non-traditional background maybe you’re part of an ethnic group or you grew up in a disadvantaged area you have had a challenging upbringing or very unique perhaps you spent a year traveling the world with your family when you were young you might want to focus on that background identity is the second area that you can focus on maybe you are a member of an interesting subgroup or subculture so if you identify with a cultural or a national heritage that is different from the mainstream heritage of the society in which you live or maybe you’re an unlikely fan of a game or political affiliation that might be something for you to focus on here whatever it is that makes you you is what you want to show the admissions officer here now the next area is interest an esoteric or highly unusual area of interest is best to focus on for example if you love doing a horticultural you’re taking horticulture classes you might discuss about a garden project you’ve been working on or if you restore old model airplanes you might talk about what brought you to that behavior what brought you to that hobby and how it impacts your life and makes you who you are you want to talk about something that’s special or endearing something that’s special to you and that will endear the admissions officer to you as a person if you remember the purpose of the application essay is to give the admissions officers more information about you also if you are a member of an interest group or club that does productive activities goes out into the community this would be a great opportunity to focus on that perhaps again going back to horticulture if you have a gardening group or you are interested in a community clean up if this interests you you can show the officers how your productivity has impacted both you and the community and what you live the last interest or the last area that you can focus on for this prompt is Talent you should keep in mind that you don’t have to have an extraordinary ability you don’t have to be a world-class gymnast or have won a Chess Championship you can talk about a normal ability it could be a useful skill that benefits those around you or demonstrates creativity effectiveness or leadership skills maybe you’ve brought members of the community together on occasions to work on public projects or negotiated peace between members of groups at school or you could talk about how you’ve created and executed difficult projects abilities like these really show that you you’re not just doing something for yourself but you’re doing something to help those around you that’s going to be hugely beneficial to help you stand out from other applicants it could be something as simple as having a way of helping others if you were for example a math tutor or English or science tutor for those that lack the ability again this would show how you use your talent to help others you don’t want to focus just on how good you are at something for example if you are a world-class piano player talking about how you’re better than the other piano players is not going to endear the admissions officers to you rather showing how you’ve overcome difficulty with your talent or used it to benefit your life or the lives of others is really going to be something that will stand out in this essay so once you have chosen an area to write on a very specific area you will move on to your next step which is to pick a story you want to find a compelling story or anecdote to start your essay that illustrates a point you want to make about yourself and this should be a real life moment something that actually happened and when we say compelling we mean it in the sense of it should have emotion it should have a clear storyline even if it’s very short it should make the reader feel where you’re coming from what were your motivations and you know some sort of impact in your story you should have a problem and a solution for example if you chose the topic of an area of background and you spent a year with your family traveling Europe I’m sure even in that situation there were many problems in solutions the problem might be you didn’t have school for a year you weren’t allowed to socialize with your friends the solution might be that you learned how to overcome that you made new friends in other countries for instance so having a problem in a solution shows that you’re able to resolve difficulties in your life and create solutions for problems that you might have once you’ve picked a story and honed in on a little segment of your experience or background you want to think about creating an anecdote an anecdote is just a little story of compelling mini story that shows the details of your general story whether it’s your identity or your background so what you want to do is start in the middle of this story and taking that world trip for instance instead of discussing what you did before that what were the steps to plan that trip you know I was 13 when my parents decided to go on a trip I had to cancel classes ABC instead of structuring it like an academic essay better to think about it as a short fictional story where you start in the middle of the action for instance if you are talking about your ethnic identity as an important part of who you are you might pick a time when that identity created a crisis where you are confronted with something difficult that you had to overcome whether it’s a conflict with another person or whether it created any kind of difficulty in your life so start right in the middle of that period of your life and in doing this you will grab the reader’s attention like we mentioned before we have hundreds or thousands of essays that readers are that applicants will be submitting so if your essay grabs the attention of the admissions officer that’s going to be the one they remember and you’re going to be the one that’s in their minds when they’re deciding who to admit to their school after you’ve created an anecdotes you want to tell a back story you want to give the reader some history to let them know about the process now here’s where you can talk about what led up to for example your trip abroad for a year you want to stay focused on that trip though on that experience so if you’re discussing your vacation abroad or your your your abroad your education your experience you don’t want to stray into other social activities you focus on how that experience affected you and what you did to prepare yourself for it give lots of details so this is important both in the anecdote portion and in the back story so don’t be vague about it tell your age tell us give sensory details give your emotional feelings at the time talked a lot about how this experience impacted you informed your personality the last step in your essay is to finish strong and creating a conclusion in many people’s minds is just a conclusion is just restating what you said at the beginning that’s only part of it of course you want to link back to the beginning so for instance if you’re talking about your trip abroad you want to remind the reader that that was the seminal important moment in your life so in a conclusion you might say that moments when we arrived at the port in Greece and I knew nobody I didn’t speak the language I didn’t realize at the time that period in my life would shape by history which shaped the rest of my life in my destiny that would be a good example of linking that seminal experience to to your overall personality and who you are you want to think about the conclusion as a status update on social media we might say today I’m eating a hamburger or something so you’re giving the reader an insight into who you are right now so the anecdote the back story is your history the conclusion is where you are now and that should show the officers that you’re ready for higher education and to further prove your point being prepared for a higher education you can talk about your future goals how this experience has prepared you for study at University maybe for graduate school what are your goals after university if you have any show that you have ambition and that this moment is not just a moment in time it’s an experience and a background that is prepared you for future goals so let’s talk about some things to do on this essay and some things to avoid in this essay do make it personal it’s a personal narrative so you can include lots of pronouns such as I me we my our family my feelings you want to give the reader a sense of who you are how it affected you again provide lots of details sensory details what were the smells what were the sounds what were your feelings were you feeling anxious were you scared did you feel overwhelmed those signaling adjectives can really make the reader feel like they’re in your place which is exactly what you want and please do focus on personal growth again you’re showing how you’ve grown because of this background this identity this talent this experience you want to show how it has made you into the full person with the GPA with the test scores that you are today here are some things to avoid in this essay avoid just telling your story show it you’ve heard of the axiom show don’t tell that means in your anecdote for instance you can show dialog with quotation marks instead of just saying my teacher was upset you might say my teacher told me we don’t want people like you in this class you know that really shows the concrete details of the situation and puts the reader in the place of the narrator which is you avoid boasting or bragging too much especially if you focus on talent again if you choose an interest or talent show how that talent made you a better person show how it impacted your growth and always remember on any of these essay prompts narrow it down you’re not trying to give a summary of your life in 650 words or less you really only have time to give the details and the impact of one area one experience in your life so there is your overview of prompt number one for the 2017-2018 common app essay if you have any questions or would like more information visit

Why Your Content Marketing Isn’t Working

Why Your Content Marketing Isn’t Working

Content marketing works. I mean, the proof

is there. I’ve been sharing these statistics for 8 years now. HubSpot has done this famous

study on blogging. They looked at over 13,500 bloggers and they found out that the blogs

marketers published, the more inbound traffic they got to their website. And they found

that an accumulation of more content brings more leads. For example, those who published

more than 400 blogs got twice as much traffic as those that have less than 400 blogs. And

if you’ve read my blogs, you know this one too. The current ROA (Return on Advertising)

is as low as 0.6. That went way down from 11.8 times ROA back in 2016. Compare it to

the ROA on organic content, which is anywhere from 14 to 16 percent conversion from your

onsite traffic. But here’s the thing. The average time spent to see content marketing

results are anywhere from 12 to 18 months. That’s what Joe Pulizzi said.

Now, after 8 years of building content, we see results like Top 3 of Google results in

as little as 30 days, but that’s not realistic for most new content marketers. Here’s the

thing about content marketing that you have to know; it works but only if you set it up

to work. Hey guys, I’m Julia McCoy, I’m a growth-focused

content marketer. I identify as a content hacker, which is the name of my new brand

launching this June. I’m also the CEO of Express Writers and Author and Blogger. Thank you so much for joining me on today’s

video. So, those statistics on content marketing that I shared at the beginning of this video,

that more content equals more leads; consistency is key and the proof is there that content

does work way better than traditional advertising. Well, I’ve been sharing those for years now

and what I see are a lot of marketers still stuck in a rut.

Today’s video is for those that are in that rut. I’m going to call you out because I care

about you. I think that many of you are just a few feet away from what could be content

marketing greatness. But here’s the thing, if you’re not getting the fundamentals right,

which we’ll go over in a minute, and you’re not being consistent about producing great

content, all the while complaining about a lack of leads, traffic, visitors and ultimately

sales. Well, I can tell you if you just sat down and fixed some of these glaring problems,

those leads, those visitors, those sales would come. \

The real problem in concert marketing is that most content marketers think of content as

a quick fix, instead of building a house, which to really be successful that’s what

it’s like. And why are thinking of it like that? They’re over here complaining about

all the things they don’t have — those traffic leads and sales — which they could have if

these fundamentals and principles were right. We’ve got to stop being absent on our company

blog. We’ve got to fix our site fundamentals that are wrong. We need to have a professional

take a look at all that icky content we’ve just let hang on our websites. It\’92s time

for us to stop complaining about the things we wish we had and start doing something about

it. Content marketing action takers are the content marketing winners. \

I’m a College dropout and I figured out content marketing after years of trial and error.

My story is proof that anyone can see content success. I’ve been blogging, I haven\’92t

missed a week for 8 years now. We’re at 90,000 visitors a month on our site and 14 to 16

percent of those leads are converting. We’re not the only success story of content; Moz,

Unbounce, CoSchedule, these are a few big players in the marketing and software industries

that have built their presence through great content.

OK. So, if you’re here watching this and you’re just not seeing success from your content,

let’s talk about how to fix that. I’m going to give you 3 ways that you can start implementing

today and you will see results start to happen right away. And long-term, you\’92re going

to be building that foundation for a great house where leads can find you, interact with

you and then eventually, buy your stuff. \ Number one: if your site isn’t fast, well

built, stable, user friendly, or built at all, this is your first step. \

OK guys, so Google has said that conversions drop by 12 percent per second of load time.

The more time it takes to load your site, the less your human lead, buyer, audience

member, is going to stick around. And a recent study done in 2017 has showed that one full

second — ready for this — can decrease conversion rates by 70 percent. So, if you have a website

and you’re not in that bracket of don’t even have a website yet, we’ll talk about you guys

soon. You can use this tool — I’m going to put it on the screen www.tools.pingdom.com

this is a free site speed checker. So, use this. See how fast your site is and if it’s

not fast, then you need a site developer to help you fix your site speed. \

OK. So, for those of you need who need your website fixed, rebuilt, and then for those

people who don’t even have a website yet, go get a WordPress developer. And you can

use a site like Upwork to quickly find top rated freelance developers that work per hour,

so it’s going to be easy to budget. You can set a budget, have them work by the hour,

pay them by the hour and for work done. WordPress developers can clean your site, fix your site,

rebuild it if it’s broken. If it’s not on WordPress, put it on WordPress, which by the

way, is one of the most SEO-friendly platforms out there. And make your site clean, beautiful,

user-friendly, fast. This should be your goal with your website and nothing less. And this

will lead to fit everything you do in content because without a good site, you can’t serve

good content. And you don’t even need to spend more than $30 to $50 an hour to find a really

good WordPress developer to help you out. And if you’re needing a brand-new site done,

that could cost you anywhere starting at $500 — $1000, depending on how many pages you want

to start out with. So, go get a great website, rebuild one if yours is crap, build one now

if you don’t have one. You’ll thank me later. \

Number two: research and put together an SEO report.\

I do this weekly. I research keywords for almost every new blog we create. Think of

finding the right keywords like this: you have a great house built, but you don’t have

your driveway yet and you don’t have your house number, how are people going to find

you? As do your keywords; optimizing your site with the right keywords to pull in the

people that are looking for you and your services on the web is like adding that number to your

house on the mailbox or paving that driveway, so people can drive up to your house and access

it. Without this house number, without this driveway, people are not going to find your

house. The same is true of not doing keyword research. Now, if you’re already known, you\’92re

an influencer, you’re a celebrity, you don’t have to do keyword research. But if you’re

none of the above, you should be doing it. \

After 8 years of doing consistent SEO research, I still find all these untapped opportunities

of low hanging fruit, where there is very little competition for a keyword and I can

create some great content around it, and rank in in the top 3 or 5 of Google. No matter

your niche, your industry, there are keyword opportunities out there. And get a Pro to

help you research these keywords if you don’t know what you’re doing. These tools are expensive.

For example, SEMrush is $100 a month but it’s one of the best tools you could use. Keyword

Finder is another great tool; it’s a little bit less cost, it starts around $20 or $30

a month. But once you have these tools, you need to know what you’re looking for, that’s

an art in and of itself. A link to a resource in this video description, where I talk about

how to find good keywords. \ And remember, a heavy trend in SEO is the

quality of the content on your site. So, once you have those keywords, the work isn’t done.

You need to create high quality content around those keywords. Otherwise, Google is just

not going to rank your site. If your content is riddled with typos, if the facts are missing,

if links to back up statistics aren\’92t there, this list goes on, that continent isn’t quality

and Google isn’t going to rank it. So, just like you wouldn’t try to build your house

yourself or remodel your kitchen yourself, unless you were a professional contractor,

don’t write your content yourself. If you don’t know how to build high quality onsite

content, get a writer and the long-term dividends will truly pay off. I promise you. \

OK, number 3, the last point: plan and set a consistent amount of content to happen on

your site on the regular. \ The best and easiest way to do this is through

a blog on your website. So, I’ve been able to uphold this goal of one high quality blog

per week, going strong for 8 years now. Some weeks, we publish two, three, four but our

goal is one per week at the minimum. So, we’ve been doing that for 8 years. I know marketers

that have been doing that for 20 years and that’s how they’ve built a huge presence and

a huge following. So, consistency in great content is really most of the secret sauce

to great content marketing once you have your fundamentals right. Also, images are really

important. You don’t just want to post content; you want to add great visuals. Take a look

at The Write Blog. So, everything we publish here has a uniquely designed header set. This

is something that I ask my designer to create for us, she creates it in Adobe Illustrator.

It’s super high quality and all the colors and styles match our brand — we have a clear

brand style. Using images, creating beautiful custom images for each blogpost, is a great

way to help your blog get more eyeballs. And don\’92t forget your social media, you need

to be sharing the content out that you create, so your friends, your followers, people that

might eventually become clients can find it and read it and interact with it. \

Email Marketing is going to be important of blogging too. You want to build a list, send

your new blogs to your list every week. \ OK, so that’s it, 3 ways to start getting

your fundamentals right so you can see content marketing success a lot sooner. And like I

said, this is a lot like building a house. This is not that cheap or fast or overnight

trick to get more sales and leads. It’s a consistent over time effort to bring long-term

results. And if you think about it, isn’t everything good in life kind of like that?

For example, marriage, you know; I have to work it out every day. I have to choose to

love my partner every day. Parenting is a lot like this too; you have to love your kid,

nurture your kid every day. So, why would we think of Marketing as anything different?

Why would we think that a quick trick is going to get long-term huge results? It’s just not

going to happen. \ I wanted to say this for the end because I

don’t want you to feel like you’re being pitched. Value is my main focus but if you need your

keywords researched, great content written, even a free content strategy consultation,

we do all that at Express Writers. We’re here to help businesses like yours grow through

content. You can get in touch with us today. You can actually see our services and our

pricing at www.expresswriters.com/content-shop Thanks so much for watching today’s video.

Want more content marketing real talk? Hit that subscribe button and then don’t forget

to hit the bell so you get notified every time I publish a new video.

And I’d love to hear what you thought of today’s video in the comments. So, let me know and

I’ll see you guys around.
